Jackfruit Seed

Jackfruit Seed

I was thinking about how homemakers in Kerala spent their time in the 1970s and 80s, without mobile phones or television.

During the rainy season, cleaning jackfruit seeds was a good option.

Removing the midrib from coconut leaves was another.
Checking for lice in each other’s hair was also something done in spare time.

A Sudden Order and an Old-Time Joy

Yesterday, when a customer asked for one kilo of fried jackfruit, I immediately ran and plucked a ripe jackfruit from the Thenvarikka tree, cut it open, sliced it, and fried it in coconut oil made from copra that had been sun-dried in summer and cold-pressed at home — and parcelled it right away. (Such enthusiasm! I never showed this much eagerness in 30 years of going to college.)

With the cut-off ends of the jackfruit bulbs, the inner core, and some jackfruit seeds, I made upperi (a stir-fry), and dinner was wonderful.

Cleaning Jackfruit Seeds — A Healing Therapy

As I sat cleaning the remaining jackfruit seeds, thinking about many things, I realized that cleaning jackfruit seeds is also a kind of healing therapy.

What I Wanted to Say Is…

Jackfruit preserve (Chakka Varatti)

Banana preserve (Pazham Varatti)

Mango preserve

Dried jackfruit seeds

Sweet mango pickle

Passion fruit syrup

All made from our own soil, 100% organic.

All these items are ready for sale.

Since no preservatives are added, they cannot be stored for very long.

They can be sent anywhere in India via India Post for those who need them.
